Freely Speaking - Devotional by Angela Gray
Welcome to Freely Speaking, an OHSOFREE devotional ministry where we share our hearts and trust God for transformation.
Today’s devotional is written and narrated by Angela Gray.
“Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name!” (Psalm 103:1 ESV).
“I was so upset, I forgot to be happy." There are moments when this quote from Eeyore, the perpetually downcast friend of Winnie-the-Pooh, hits too close to home and echoes my state of mind.
Like many others, I struggle with being a “people pleaser,” and “not pleasing people” can become a troublesome burden. Even when I believe I’ve given my best, knowing that I haven’t met others’ expectations can weigh heavily on my soul.
When feelings of failure cause me to forget about the forgiveness of my Heavenly Father, I have found a perfect remedy. I talk to myself!
Today’s scripture opens an entire chapter in which David gives his self a “good talking to”. We aren't told exactly where or when David wrote this psalm, but we do know he found it necessary to tell himself to praise God and to do it with all his might!
Throughout these 22 verses, David extols the goodness of God, reminding himself of all the Lord’s blessings—forgiveness, healing, strength, and protection, to name a few. David concludes this powerful prose by telling himself, and us, once again to: “Bless the LORD, O my soul!”
When thoughts of defeat threaten to overwhelm me, I have learned to run to God’s Word for a “Divine Reset”. As I read His Word and proclaim His truth, I am reminded of who He is and, in turn, who I am. I am not a failure—I am forgiven. I am not defeated—I am delivered. I choose not to be a people pleaser—I choose to be a powerful praiser.
If you are struggling with the weight of discouragement or defeat, I invite you to run to God’s Word today. As you begin to focus on His goodness, your soul will overflow with praise, and you will “Bless the Lord” and be blessed too!
