Freely Speaking - Devotional by Sharon Gomez

Welcome to Freely Speaking, an OHSOFREE devotional ministry where we share our hearts and trust God for transformation.

Today’s devotional is written by Sharon Gomez, and narrated by Angela Gray.

“But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever” (1 Timothy 5:8, ESV).

I carry the burden of balance. Work, family, service, health, household-these are blessings that have been bestowed on me, yet sometimes I long for something different, as if I am missing out on my purpose.

When I get impatient with what I want, God reminds me that I am placed in this season for a reason. I am nestled between loving elderly parents and wonderful grown children. Sometimes I long for things others have at this time of their lives: vacations, new cars, remodeled homes, and grandchildren.

But God is with me in the waiting, and today’s verse flipped my heart. Things I sometimes feel are burdens are actually my divine assignment! I know not everyone is given this specific assignment, but this is where God wants me right now.

After a terribly sad divorce, God placed me in a single-bedroom home in the backyard of my parents' lot. From my desk, I see the detached bedroom my college-aged son lives in. Only minutes away is my youngest daughter and her fiancé. My oldest daughter recently moved 6 hours away, but comes home often enough to maintain our family bond.

Here we are, my little family unit, together in the day-to-day of life, with Jesus carrying all of us. We help each other with household chores, animal caretaking, grocery shopping, medical appointments, and anything else the day requires. Kingdom work right here in our little homes!

Burdens and blessings seem like odd pairs, and I know this current burden of balance will shift into something new. I wonder if you feel the same way. We have no idea what the next assignment will look like, but we know we can trust the One who has already laid down the path, and we know that path will be for good!
