Freely Speaking - Devotional by Sharon Gomez

Welcome to Freely Speaking, an OHSOFREE devotional ministry where we share our hearts and trust God for transformation.

Today’s devotional is written by Sharon Gomez, and narrated by Angela Gray.

“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28, ESV).

This verse scares me. Yes, this popular verse, seen on magnets, pillows, T-shirts, and coffee mugs, is a beautiful promise that I know is true. Yet, when I haven’t seen the purpose in my pain, I get scared.

What if the things I’ve gone through can’t be used? What if I missed what God wanted me to do with them? What if I won’t see the purpose on this side of heaven?

Sometimes I feel as though this promise isn’t for me. Surely, it is true for others! I have heard so many beautiful testimonies, and my heart is truly moved—for them.

As much as this verse scares my heart, my head tells me something different. I don’t need to know what God is doing with my story. I just need to trust Him as the author of my story. God is in control and works all things for good because He is good and His plans are good. He is holy and incapable of doing anything other than what is right.

When we look at Scripture from the Old Testament, time and time again, we see God taking the stories of faithful people—even those who made disobedient choices—and weaving those stories together to fulfill His promise of salvation through the Son of David. Today’s verse affirms this truth, which still stands today.

I am thankful that God loves me despite my fears. When I push the lies away through the power of the Holy Spirit, I return to a place of trust.

God just wants our hearts! Our past, present, and future are in His hands, and nothing we can do will separate us from Him. You may have a glorious testimony to share, or you can join me as I trust my story to Him. Either way, our experiences glorify God, and that is a truth worth clinging to!
