Freely Speaking - Devotional by Sharon Gomez

Welcome to Freely Speaking, an OHSOFREE devotional ministry where we share our hearts and trust God for transformation.

Today’s devotional is written by Sharon Gomez, and narrated by Angela Gray.“Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law” (Psalm 119:18, NIV).

Today’s verse, taken from the longest psalm in Scripture, can feel either instructive or condemning depending on our life experiences—or, more importantly, our perspective.

The word law is used throughout this Psalm to reveal God’s character through His written Word. A right understanding of God’s character is what motivates us to continue seeking Him.

The Christian Standard Bible (CSB) offers a slightly softer rendering of this verse: “Open my eyes so that I may contemplate wondrous things from your instruction.” This translation emphasizes our willingness to seek God through His instruction, recognizing that His commands are given for our good.

Choosing to seek Him is a decision we get to make every day. Each time we choose to spend time in God’s Word and ask Him to open our eyes and our hearts, His truth comes alive and teaches us more about who He is. As we come to know Him more deeply, our knowledge grows into trust. And as our trust in His character grows, so does our wisdom and our desire to obey Him.

When I read Scripture with open eyes and an undistracted mind, I often hear a whisper of direction or experience the gentle sting of loving correction. Both remind me that I am seen, known, and deeply cared for by God.

Only by spending intentional, undistracted time in Scripture can we continue to discover new truths. The enemy will use every lie he can to keep us from God’s instruction, but God’s law is never separated from the grace and mercy that empower us to live it out. Choose each day to ask God to open your eyes to the wonders of His law.

The next time you feel a tug on your heart while reading Scripture, pause for a moment. Write down what God is showing you and talk with Him about it. It may be the instruction you have been seeking or the gentle correction of a loving Father who cares deeply for you.
