Freely Speaking - Devotional by Marge Webb

Welcome to Freely Speaking, an OHSOFREE devotional ministry where we share our hearts and trust God for transformation.

Today’s devotional is written by Marge Webb and narrated by Angela Gray.

“Have mercy upon me, O Lord; for I am weak: O Lord, heal me; for my bones are vexed” (Psalm 6:2 KJV).

When I saw this month’s topic, “What burden do you bear?” I had two thoughts: my burdens are no worse than anyone else’s, and how do I share without sounding whiny?

So, at the risk of sounding whiny, I think the burden I bear is the amount of pain we experience in our household. Aging has not been kind to us. My husband has struggled for many years with neck, back, and knee pain. He deals with several major diseases and has had seven surgeries in 12 years.

In the Psalm above, David said his bones are vexed. It sounds like arthritis to me. But whatever they called his suffering, he knew God could heal him.

Jesus came to offer His life for our sins, but during His earthly ministry, healing the sick became a constant focus. In Matthew 9:35, we see Jesus traveling to villages healing every disease and sickness. In the book of Mark, He heals a woman, ill for many years with bleeding, relieving her pain, embarrassment, and financial loss. In John, Jesus applies mud to a blind man, and after asking the man to wash his face, his sight is restored. In Luke, when Jairus comes to Jesus because his daughter is critically ill, Jesus says, “Don’t be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed.”

My husband suffers every day in our house of pain, and it is heartbreaking. He has tried prayer, medication, injections while under anesthesia, physical therapy, massage therapy, chiropractors, and even an electrical stimulation system. While these therapies have provided some relief, he still suffers.

I believe someone reading this is experiencing pain or caring for someone in anguish. While we may not enjoy complete healing on this earth, we will have healthy bodies in Heaven. In the meantime, if you are suffering or weary from caregiving duties, remember that according to Isaiah 53:4, Jesus took our pain and suffering into His body, and He understands our burden.
