Freely Speaking - Devotional by Liz’a Biswell

Welcome to Freely Speaking, an OHSOFREE devotional ministry where we share our hearts and trust God for transformation.

Today’s devotional is written by Liz’a Biswell and narrated by Angela Gray.

“Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you… And nations shall come to see your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising. Lift up your eyes all around, and see; they all gather together, they come to you; your sons shall come from afar, and your daughters shall be carried on the hip” (Isaiah 60:1, 3-4 ESV).

Before Israel was a nation on a map, Scripture spoke of Israel as a person and a people. In Genesis 32:28, Jacob is given the name Israel, meaning “one who strives with God.” Israel became the identity of God’s chosen people—those set apart to reveal His glory to the world.

Paul expands this picture in Romans 11, describing Israel as an olive tree with natural branches (the Jews) and wild branches (the Gentiles) grafted in. Through Christ, every believer—regardless of background—is welcomed into the same tree, nourished by the same root. Galatians 3:28 reinforces this truth: in Christ, there is no Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male or female. We are one family.

This means something life-changing: every promise in Scripture is available to you and me. We are not disqualified by nationality, status, history, or gender. For years, I quietly believed I didn’t qualify—too flawed, too inconsistent, too “less than” even to ask. But God’s Word revealed the truth: only Jesus is worthy, and because we are in Him, we have full access to the Father.

Understanding this is essential to receiving God’s promises. To receive, we must believe. If you’ve doubted your place in God’s family, ask Him to show you who you are to Him. Prepare yourself—His answer will overwhelm you with love. Command doubt to flee. Ask Jesus to forgive any unbelief. He is faithful to respond. Our part is simply to ask and trust.

Encourage your heart today by declaring:

I am a light in the darkness because the glory of the Lord rises upon me. His light in me draws others to Him.
