Freely Speaking - Devotional by Sharon Gomez
Welcome to Freely Speaking, an OHSOFREE devotional ministry where we share our hearts and trust God for transformation.
Today’s devotional is written by Sharon Gomez, and narrated by Angela Gray.
“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you” (Matthew 7:7, NIV).
Yes. No. Not yet. If you are a parent, these three responses pretty much cover a child’s request. Yet when we bring our requests to God through prayer, these responses may or may not feel fair.
Today’s verse can bring excitement to new believers or leave a sense of long-suffering to those in a season of waiting. God answers our prayers with yes, no, or not yet, so how do we stay motivated in prayer when there’s a chance we won’t get what we want? We stay motivated through obedience.
Jesus tells us to first ask. We bring all our requests to God. We must ask in the Father’s will, not with the expectation that He will grant our request just because we asked. God is our perfect provider, and He will never put us on a path that is not good for us.
Jesus next tells us to seek. The only way to hear God’s response is to know the One who provides the answer! We need to seek to know who Jesus is. The more we read, study, and ask Him through prayer to shape our minds and hearts, the more we will be able to discern His yeses, noes, and not-yets.
Last, Jesus tells us to knock. Jesus does not force His presence on us. He waits for an invitation. When we invite Him into our hearts and minds, the door to His kingdom will be opened, and we will be saved through grace. His grace enables us to walk through life’s circumstances regardless of the prayer response we receive.
The more we ask, seek, and knock, the more we align our hearts and minds to God’s will, which will help us accept God’s answers.
Think about your perspective on prayer. Is it easy to accept His response even when it isn’t what you truly desire?
